Meet Simon Shelton, our expert ski guide for your adventure in Afghanistan. A New Zealander with nearly two decades of expertise, Simon embodies the spirit of skiing and exploration. He's a qualified ski patroller and avalanche instructor who has carved his path across the globe, from the snowy terrains of New Zealand and Japan to the remote corners of Iran, Alaska, and the awe-inspiring landscapes of Antarctica.

Simon's journey includes over 750 days in Antarctica, where he led as the Winter Base Leader in two winter-over expeditions. His experience in Afghanistan, particularly in the Bamiyan region where he spent four months, makes him uniquely familiar with the local terrain and culture. He has not only skied the areas within our trip plan but has also contributed significantly by providing training and new avalanche rescue equipment to local ski guides.

His longstanding collaboration with Gull Hussain and Amir Foladi, spanning over 11 years, underlines his deep connections and trust within the industry. Simon brings this extensive experience and passion to our 10-day ski adventure in Afghanistan, promising not just exhilarating skiing but also cultural immersion and intrepid exploration.

Itinerary

DAY 01 KABUL 
1st March 2025 
Arrival and briefing. You may have time to visit Sakhi Shrine (Blue Mosque)
And viewpoint Bibi Mehro Hill.
Overnight in Kabul.
 
DAY 02: KABUL– BAMYAN
2nd MARCH 2025
You will drive from Kabul to Bamiyan, via Hajigag Pass, which is a popular tourist destination in Afghanistan. Along the route, there are World Heritage Sites, an open museum, and the first Afghanistan National Park with a dominant Hazara population. When you arrive in Bamiyan, you will have time to see the Bamiyan cultural landscape, the Buddha niches, Shahr-e-Ghulghula (The City of Screams), the Baba Mountain, and the beautiful, lush valleys of Bamiyan.

DAY 03 - 04 - 05: SKI THE BABA MOUNTAINS
3rd - 4th - 5th MARCH 2025
Skiing in Afghanistan does not have a long history. Some initiatives were made before the Soviet-Afghan war started and it was stopped for decades, then in 2009 Skiing started in Bamiyan and it became an interesting attraction for Afghanistan and especially Bamiyan. The entire local community started skiing and developing their own “local bazaar-made” wooden ski equipment. It became very popular with the locals during winter, they would enjoy meeting and engaging with international skiers and snowboarders, sharing their backyard and learning to ski. Some of the most popular skiing locations in Bamiyan are Qazan, Khushkak, and Chapdara where you will be visiting a lot of locals and exploring wilderness valleys on vehicle, foot or skinning and enjoying untracked snow on the way back to the villages.

DAY 06: BAMYAN - BAND-E-AMIR LAKES 
6th MARCH 2025
You will drive to Band-e-Amir National Park, 70 kilometers to the west of Bamiyan. At Band-e-Amir, you will walk on the frozen lakes and view the spectacular frozen waterfalls and the sceneries. We may even meet some local ice fishing locals. We will also be enjoying walking around and experiencing the local hospitality and food.

DAY 07: CHEEL BURJ
7th MARCH 2025
We drive to Cheel Burj to the west of Bamiyan and visit the Forty Tower another historical place with a thousand years of history. On the way back to Bamiyan watching the Buzkashi one of the famous Afghan sports a group of horse riders compete to win in the Yakawlang district. You will stay at the local guest house and taste the traditional 100% organic food.

DAY 08: RETURN TO BAMYAN 
8th MARCH 2025
You will also visit the natural landscape of Dragon Valley and see the ruins of Shahr-e-Zohak (Red Fort) and the remains of Shahr-e-Ghulghula (The City of Screams).
Overnight in Bamiyan. 
 
DAY 09: BAMYAN - PARWAN – KABUL
9th MARCH 2025
You will then drive to Kabul via Shibar Pass, in the way you cross Charikar the center of Parwan, and then visit the Buddhist stupa in Topdara, then stop at Stalif to visit the clay-making center of Afghanistan and see the recreation center for the last king of Afghanistan – then drive to Kabul city. 
Overnight in Kabul.
 
DAY 10: FINAL DAY – DEPARTURE 
10th MARCH 2025
Depending on flight timing, we have the option of visiting the Kabul National Museum, Darul-Aman Palace, Birds Market, and last stop souvenir shop at Chicken Street markets. 
 
Fly back home.
